THE CHRISM MASS AT THE PARISH CHURCH IN LITTLE WALSINGHAM
The Blessing of Oils is a significant ritual that takes place during the Chrism Mass, celebrated by the bishop and priests of a diocese. Usually held during Holy Week, this sacred ceremony serves as a moment of unity and renewal for the clergy as they gather to bless the oils used in the sacraments throughout the year. There are three types of oils that are blessed: the Oil of the Sick, the Oil of Catechumens, and Sacred Chrism, each with its own profound purpose in the life of the Church. The Oil of the Sick is used to anoint those who are ill, offering comfort and healing. The Oil of Catechumens is applied to those preparing for baptism, symbolising their strength and preparation in faith. Finally, Sacred Chrism is used in the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, and ordination, signifying the gift of the Holy Spirit. This beautiful tradition not only highlights the importance of these sacred oils but also invites the faithful to reflect on their own spiritual journey and the grace bestowed through the sacraments.
