About St. Mary's Church

A Place of Worship and Community

St. Mary's Church is an Anglican church located in the heart of Hemsby, Norfolk. We are a vibrant and welcoming community dedicated to serving God.

The building is largely medieval in the decorated and perpendicular styles of architecture, the bosses on the roof and the font decorated with lions and symbols of the Evangelists are medieval. The 14th century square embattled tower contains a clock erected in 1870 and is decorated with flush work at the base and on the battlements. The two-storied south porch has a vaulted ceiling with carved stone bosses (depicting God the Father and the key scenes from the New Testament), which is incredibly rare for a village church.

The lovely east window designed for the Parish by Caroline Swash dates from 1985, and perhaps the most unusual detail is found in the piscina – the drain is set within a lion’s mask. The church has Grade II listing and has numerous specific and rare features, as listed above that should be preserved, celebrated, and maintained for future generations to witness and enjoy.

The Barn Room

The Barn Room is used for our fundraising events and it is available to hire. There is a well equiped kitchen, a hall room with plenty of chairs and tables and a toilet for the disabled.  Why not book the Barn Room for your event or party! Only £10.00 per hour!

Flegg Area Foodbank

We are now a collection point for the Flegg Area Foodbank. There is a large labelled plastic container in the church for various food items. This will help to provide food to those who need it in our villages. For more information look at their website here.

Community Engagement

We are actively involved in our local community, organizing events and initiatives.THE BARN ROOM opposite the church serves as a community centre. It includes: a disabled access toilet, an office with a large printer, and a kitchen as well as a hall which accommodates our fund raising.

We also host a Community Fridge run by Great Yarmouth Borough Council in the Barn Room, which will help those struggling with the increase in the cost of living and feeding children in school holidays. It will also help to eliminate food waste in the village.

COFFEE MORNINGS

These are held monthly depending on the time of year and are very well supported. These have provided essential funding for the Tower Restoration Fund – the work was completed in November 2023

FUNDRAISING EVENTS

MUSICAL GROUPS

Musical evenings are held  in the church to help with fund raising. St. Mary's Singers enhance our church services at certain times such as Easter, All Souls Day and Remembrance Day.

The A Strings and the Ad Hoc Choir together make a group of string players with  a singing ensemble.  As a community group we highly value our use of the Hemsby Church Barn Room for our weekly rehearsal. We use our time and talents to support a number of local charities, and community groups. We make no charge when helping local organisations including church events in several local villages, Hemsby Church Quiz Night, Gt. Yarmouth Samaritans, Stalham Summer Festival, Filby Bells restoration project and carol services in Acle, Runham and Rollesby. We are only able to offer our services freely due to the support of Hemsby church in allowing us to use the barn room to rehearse and develop our musical skills.

ST. MARY’S SINGERS

Highly qualified and motivated .

St. Mary’s Singers founded by Donna Duval (a professional entertainer/singer) began in 2006 as a one off Christmas Carol Service at Hemsby Church that left people wanting more.  The singers started attending special services throughout the church calendar year.   Candlemass, Maundy Thursday, Easter Sunday, Pentecost, Patronal, Harvest, All Souls, remembrance, Advent, Lighting of the Christmas Tree & Carol Service.  Also attending special services at Winterton, East Somerton and Horsey Churches (Flegg Parishes).  Performing songs appropriate to the service/event from Choral to modern Popular songs with delightful harmonies.

Dates to attend Weddings and Funerals to sing requested songs were added to the years events.  St. Mary’s Singers have performed in Theatres, Hotels, Pubs and many other venues helping to raise funds for different charities as well as the Church.

The singers have raised tens of thousands of pounds for Hemsby Church with their Christmas & Summer Concerts, Cd Sales, outside events etc.  which have helped towards church funds, the “Thatching of the Barn Room Roof”,  “The Church Lighting”, “Church Heating”,  “The Choir Stall Heating”, “The Church Tower” and “The Barn Room Electrics”.

18 years on and the 24 singers have grown from strength to strength.  Singing at more events and performing more Concerts. With their smart dress and professional approach, the singers always add a touch of class to any event. www.st-marys-singers-hemsby.com
